Our History

The Founder

Open Courses Myanmar was founded by Venerable Vayamasara, member of the State Theravada Ovadcariya Sayadaws, who has been conducting state-level FREE courses on Abhidhamma, Visuddhimagga, Tikakyaw and Buddhist Cultural Education for 27 years since 1993. Every year, about 550 adult and young students enroll the courses. The courses are situated at Vijayamingalar Dhamma Building in front the historic Mahapasana Cave, in the campus of Kabaraye Pagoda, Yangon. Open Courses Myanmar was oriiginally aimed at providing free online classes for the Dhamma courses above which were closed due to Global Pandemic but at the same time Venerable would like to conduct other online courses together with professional qualified teachers . Venerable Vayamasara has also been carrying out the following philanthropic projects for years.

Kyauk Chaung Thar Free Dispensary

Every year, there are about 30, 000 patients getting medical treatment for various diseases including dental health problems. The free clinic is situated at Kyauk Chaung Thar. About 12 doctos and 8 nurses are working as volunteers in the clinic on ever Tuesday and Thursday.

The clinic occasionally provides mobile medical services in remote villages in Kawa townships, Bago Division. It was founded in 2008.

Kyauk Chaung Thar Monastic Education

There are about 250 students from KG to Grade 9 in the school getting free formal education and daily nutrition support. Various courses on computer and English are also conducted for young and old alike in the summer.

Kyauk Chaung Thar Monastery

There are about 40 monks and novices and 7 laymen students dwelling in and learning Buddhist scriptures.
